860-880 Lake Shore Drive Tour
Notable not only for being the first buildings to be framed and clad in steel, the two 26-story buildings at 860-880 North Lake Shore Drive built in 1949-1951, also have reputable recognition because through these structures architect Mies Van der Rohe tested and perfected features that defined his most famous style during his career: floor to ceiling glass curtain walls, exterior I-beam struts, recessed lobbies within colonnades that opens into a plaza with extensive use of travertine. Essential in re-defining Chicago’s mid-century modern architecture, the buildings accommodate residential units within a large plaza. They are set at right angles on a trapezoidal site to maximize views of Lake Michigan. Guests are invited to attend presentations and tours through various spaces of this historic building, including the restored plaza level, storefronts, and a duplex unit on the 26th-25th floor.
The tour will be led by Mark Sexton, founder of KSP, the architects for the 1992 and 2009 renovation of the unit and public spaces, respectively.
